According to industry sources quoted by daily electrical La Tercera, the temporary suspension of the operation is due to the international economic crisis, which has become more expensive and restricted the financing of investment projects.
The central Robles, to be located between the towns of Pellines and Loanco, some 380 kilometers south of Santiago, is the largest project planned by the electric company in Chile and is the only one with the Environmental Impact Study (EIA) approval.
The plant's main objective is to provide power to the Central Interconnected System (SIC), which supplies 93 percent of the Chilean population.
According to the company's plans, the project's initial phase, corresponding to the first unit of 375 megawatts, should be operational in the second quarter of 2012, and the second phase during the third quarter of that year.
